My Browser Freezes Up When Downloading Movies

If your browser freezes while downloading movies, try disabling your browser add-ons or plugins.

Modern browsers can handle file downloads of all sizes, so if yours hangs up when you download movies then something on your computer isn’t working correctly. You probably don’t spend much time thinking about how your computer works—that is, until it stops working the way it should. Fortunately, this kind of problem has some easy fixes that you can try right away.

Older versions of Web browsers had file size limits for downloading, and had more problems in general with downloading large files. If you use an outdated version of your browser, upgrade to the latest version. Alternatively, try using a different browser if you have more than one on your computer.

In Firefox

Mozilla, the maker of Firefox, recommends that you clean out your download history if you experience hangups and delays while trying to download files from Firefox. Simply go to the Menu Bar, select “Tools,” choose “Downloads” and select “Clear List” to erase your download history.

In Internet Explorer

Microsoft, the maker of Internet Explorer, recommends that you relaunch Internet Explorer in “no add-ons” mode if it freezes while you try to download larger files. Click on the "Start" button in the bottom-left corner of your Windows session, and choose “All Programs.” From there, click on “Accessories,” and then click on “System Tools.” From the resulting list, choose “Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).” If this fixes the problem, then one of your Internet Explorer add-ons is to blame.

Too Much Security

Computer security software has a way of interfering with legitimate programs and processes—including the download of large files like movies. If you experience the same problem in more than one browser, or if any the above solutions don’t work, try disabling any automatic scanning that your security programs perform on file downloads. If that doesn’t work, try temporarily disabling your security software completely.
