The PlayStation 3 lets you stream Netflix movies directly to your HDTV.

The PlayStation 3 advertises that it “only does everything.” Besides playing Blu-ray discs and video games, the PS3 can be set up as a media server, browse the Internet and stream movies live through Netflix. Viewing Netflix on your PS3 requires that you have an active Internet connection and the Netflix access disc or app for your PS3. Some users experience errors, including connectivity problems and freeze-ups of their PS3s, while using Netflix. Troubleshooting may resolve the problem.

Some users have reported receiving the error code “80029940” when using a Netflix access disc. To resolve this issue, check the disc for scratches or dirt, and clean the disc with a soft, damp cloth if needed. If you continue to receive this message, you may need to order a new disc from Netflix or download the Netflix app to your PS3.

Internet Connection

The PS3 requires an active Internet connection to connect to Netflix. Navigate to the “Settings” tab on the XrossMediaBar and follow the steps to select “Network Settings.” Select your wired or wireless connection from the menu and check your modem to verify connectivity to your PS3.

Try Later

High levels of Internet traffic from your area or through Netflix may cause your PS3 to experience problems when using the application. Wait a few moments and try to connect to Netflix again.

Date and Time

Netflix requires that your PS3 be updated to the most recent date. The date is automatically set each time your PS3 connects to the PlayStation Network, but can also be set manually. Select the “Settings” menu from the XMB and select “Date and Time Settings” and finally “Date and Time.” Choose the “Set Manually” option, and enter the current date and time with the “X” button on your controller.

Reinstall Netflix

If your PS3 continues to crash after launching Netflix, delete the app and reinstall it. Select the “Video” option from the XMB and select “Netflix” from the menu. Press the “Triangle” button to open the options menu, and select “Delete.” The Netflix icon will still be visible after you delete the app. Select the “Netflix” icon and choose the “Install” option.
